Serving in World War II was an extraordinary act of patriotism. But as described in this Family Heritage Artifact, it was also what was expected in order to protect the American way of life.

And while the guest doesn't recall many complaints about the grander mission, there was plenty of room for grumbling about the grub on a naval vessel.
